If you are looking for a safe and healthy treat for your furry friend, then why not opt for a small portion of fruit and vegetables? Before you grab anything, you can find out of your fridge or cupboard, it is vital that you do some research into foods which are healthy, and which are toxic as some fruits and vegetables are poisonous to pets. Luckily, we have created this brief guide to some healthier treat options for dogs. Make sure to continue reading on to find out more.
If possible, try to steer clear of human food for pets anyway but if you are out of dog treats, here are some alternatives:
Vegetables:
Broccoli – in small amounts and can be fed either steamed or raw
Carrots – can be given steamed, or boiled
Celery – in small amounts
Green beans – steamed, boiled, or raw
Sweet and regular potatoes – must be plain with no seasoning and can be given boiled or steamed not raw
Fruit:
There is a wide variety of fruits that your dog can have, let’s take a look at the options:
Apples – must be de-seeded and cored, apple slices are best to give
Bananas – must be given in smaller amounts due to sugar
Mango – the stone/pit, and skin must be removed before giving it to your dog
Nectarine – remove the stone/pit before feeding to your dog
Strawberries – they are very sugary so make sure to feed in insignificant amounts
Watermelon – before feeding, remember to remove the rind and seeds
Dogs can also have oranges, peaches, pears, and pineapple but remember to remove any stones or pits, and the skin before handing it to your dog.
